Abstract: Is grouping children by ability the only way to use small groups in reading instruction? The experienced classroom teachers writing this issue of School Talk say a resounding NO! Grouping children by the kinds of strategies they use and the particular instruction they need is far more effective. And teachers can only do that by observing their students closely and knowing them well. This issue also includes insights from literacy coaches in the South Carolina Reading Initiative.
