"I know the lessons that students take from literary works are often private and powerful, and I respect that. When I talk about literature, I know I am often presenting students with my own feelings and insights. But this is also how I see my role as teacher. I am a doorman opening doors for a living. I want students to realize there is someone speaking to them about themselves. When you discover that, I think you are hooked as a reader."
