"With the new national reading standards settling into place, I think it is important for English teachers and literacy leaders to keep this question in mind as they design and implement reading instruction: Is the teacher the only person in the classroom who is truly engaging with the text? I believe teachers will know their students are engaging with texts when they place both the text and their students at the center of classroom instruction. We must avoid giving the impression that reading literature is something only English teachers do well. (From “Keeping the Reader in Reading Instruction” by Wilbur H. Sowder, Oct ELQ, p. 4)"
