Cultivating New Voices Among Scholars of Color
Description of Fellowship Activities

The program will cover a two-year period. During this time the cohort of fellows participate in the following activities:

Year 1:  The first year is devoted to the development of research questions and identification of appropriate methods of inquiry. Support is primarily achieved through participation in two institutes.

A.     The first institute is held at NCTE's Annual Convention where the fellows meet for intensive sessions with established researchers to discuss their research goals, methods of inquiry, and plan for analysis. A poster session is guaranteed at the convention for fellows to present their work. A roundtable session is guaranteed at this same venue for alumni of the CNV program.

B.     The second institute is held in the spring at a university campus and serves as a follow-up to the fall meeting. The workshop covers several days, is directed by Research Foundation-affiliated researchers, and may include guest workshops conducted by members of the hosts university’s faculty.

Year 2:  The second year will be devoted to moving the Year 1 research toward completion and/or publication. Fellowship support in the second year is primarily achieved through participation in two workshops.

A.     The first workshop is held at NCTE's Annual Convention and the objective is to move research projects toward publication.

B.     The second workshop takes place in the spring at a university campus and serves as a follow-up to the fall meeting. Fellows will be acknowledged in a graduation ceremony.

In addition to these workshops, each Fellow works closely with a Mentor from the NCTE research community who provide support at the workshops and participate in a community of scholars in the following activities:

  • poster sessions
  • mock interviews and presentations
  • dialog with activist scholars
  • data work sessions
  • intense one-on-one time with each fellow
  • career advising
  • collaboration with other fellows for presentations
  • cross collaboration between cohorts

Program Support
1.      The program reimburses each fellow for travel and rooming expenses pertaining to the CNV Institutes held each fall and spring.
2.      Materials: The program reimburses each fellow annually for any equipment (tapes, etc.) related to his/her research ($600 per year).
