Highlight of Upcoming CEE Events at the 2008 NCTE Annual Convention

CEE DAY, Friday, November 21, 2008

Kickoff Event--CEE Roundtables - 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. (Session A.54)
This session will be the kick-off for a full day CEE-sponsored sessions. The roundtables will explore the challenges and possibilities of teacher education. Join aspiring, new, and experienced teacher educators in this wide-ranging session.

CEE Awards Session - 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. (Session B.51)
The Conference on English Education gives three prestigious awards in honor of Richard A. Meade, James N. Britton, and Janet Emig. In this session the 2008 award winners present the work that earned them this year's tributes, including research on teacher development, teacher reflective inquiry, and exemplary scholarship in English Education.
Richard A. Meade Award: George Hillocks, Jr., Conforming to and Breaking with NCTE's Guidelines and Standards for the Teaching of Writing
James N. Britton Award: Leila Christenbury, A Place I Did Not Want to Be and a Story I Hoped Not to Tell: The Experience of Retracing the Journey
Janet Emig Award: Suzanne M. Miller, Multimodal Literacies?: Designing English Education for the 21st Century

CEE Commission Meetings - 2:30 - 3:45 p.m. (Session D.50)
We invite all interested CEE and NCTE members to attend the Commissions of their choice.

CEE General Membership Reunion and Social - 4:00 - 5:15 p.m. (Session E.51)
Attend the CEE membership meeting and help plan future CEE events. This year’s reunion and social hour will include opportunities for members to contribute ideas about the substance and form of future CEE meetings and projects as well as the usual chance to meet and mingle with English education colleagues from around the country. As every year, the meeting will include announcements about ELA teacher education position openings and informal conversation with prospective candidates.

CEE Strand
The CEE Strand is sessions and meetings that are designed for those who are engaged in the preparation, support, and continuing education of teachers of English language arts.

CEE James Moffett Award Session - Saturday, November 22, 2008, 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. (Session G.54)
The Conference on English Education offers an annual grant to support teacher research projects inspired by the scholarship of James Moffett. Each proposed project must display an explicit connection to the work of James Moffett and should both enhance the applicant’s teaching by serving as a source of professional development and be of interest and value to other educators.  In this session the 2007 award winner will present the work that earned her tribute last year.

CEE Colloquium - Monday, November 24, 2008, 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Session W.25)
Structuring Field Experiences for Pre-Service Teachers
This year’s CEE Colloquium will examine the purpose and potential of field experiences in teacher education. The presenters bring multiple points of view to the topic, exploring the possibilities of video cases and service learning opportunities as approaches to providing induction experiences for pre-service teachers.
