Commission on Teacher Candidate Assessment

Co-Chairs: Patricia Schall, College of St. Elizabeth, Morristown, NJ
Lisa Scherff, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa
Liaison:     Bob Yagelski, University at Albany, NY
Don Zancanella, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque

Mission:
Discussion and activities center on the following topics and questions:
Should standardized tests of teacher candidates test content knowledge or test teaching ability?
What are the adverse impacts of standardized tests?
How do we educate our own membership on the nature of state licensure and candidate assessment?
What do we mean by performance-based assessment and standards-based assessment?
Who should be involved in making decisions about candidates for teaching?
How can the profession recapture control of who is licensed to teach and who is not?

Current Projects:
1)  Look at NCTE/NCATE approved institutions' assessments.
2)  Systematic study of "top" 1 to 5 assessments.
