NCTE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AWARD

Supported by Pearson Prentice Hall Education

Purpose: To nurture the development of new leaders within state/regional/provincial affiliates and NCTE.

Eligibility: Any early career teacher (1-5 years experience) who has never attended an NCTE Annual Convention and who has demonstrated a capacity for professional leadership as well as a willingness to join and participate in the affiliate during the upcoming academic year.

Frequency/Number of Awards: Awards will be available to one awardee from each state, regional (District of Columbia, New England Association, Inland Northwest Council), and provincial affiliate of NCTE. However, NCTE requests that each affiliate choose both an awardee and an alternate, so that if the awardee is unable to attend the NCTE Annual Convention, the alternate may receive the award.

Award Specifics: The award will be $500 to help defray costs of attending the NCTE Annual Convention in the year it is given and a ticket to the Affiliate Breakfast at which awardees will be recognized. Award checks (with registration and meal fees deducted) will be available for awardees to pickup at the Convention Registration desk.

Procedures: Each state/regional/provincial affiliate will determine its own process for selecting its awardee and alternate; however NCTE asks that affiliates make an effort to
1) invite their membership to submit awardees and
2) include awardees from underrepresented populations.
NCTE will accept without further review all affiliate awardees and alternates that have met the above criteria and the deadline; however, NCTE reserves the right to request further information if needed to clarify the affiliate's material on its awardee.

Administration: The NCTE Division Director of Communications & Affiliate Services will handle the initial publicity and notification to affiliates of the program, collect awardees from the state/regional/provincial affiliates, and administer the giving of the award. State, regional, and provincial affiliates will develop their own process for choosing awardees and alternates using the criteria listed above and drawing upon the suggestions listed below.

Deadline: The final awardees and alternates NCTE Leadership Development Award Submission Forms must be submitted to the Division Director of Communications & Affiliate Services, NCTE, 1111 W. Kenyon Rd., Urbana, IL 61801; fax: 217-278-3760, no later than May 1 of the year of the award.
