Join leaders from affiliates in Regions 2, 4, 5, and 6, NCTE leaders of color and professional development consultants, NCTE Vice President Carol Jago, members of the NCTE Standing Committee on Affiliates (SCOA), and members of the NCTE staff to share expertise and find answers to the question: How can affiliate leaders capitalize on 21st century literacies to build capacity, reenergize membership, and rethink our work?  During the retreat affiliate leaders will

  • learn about ways to rethink the work of their affiliates and reenergize their affiliate boards and memberships.
  • share affiliate best practices.
  • learn about NCTE initiatives and resources and how they and their affiliates can take advantage of these.
  • work side-by-side with NCTE leaders of color and professional development consultants.
  • establish a ongoing network of colleagues.
  • develop a 21st century plan of action to take back to their affiliates.

What did affiliate leaders like most about the Affiliate Leadership Meeting in 2007?

  • I enjoyed learning about what is possible as we LEAP into the 21st Century.
  • I enjoyed the information sharing, openness, friendliness, and easiness of entering conversations and debates.  . . . will resonate for years to come.
  • . . . has been most valuable for me. I feel like I learned a lot and have many ideas to take back to my board.
  • I liked meeting other people from NCTE and state affiliates . . . not feeling isolated about what we are trying to do.
  • I’m fairly new in the organization. I thought I might find myself treading the water of understanding here. To the contrary!  I found the information to be pertinent and relevant. I learned so much!
  • I enjoyed exchanging ideas – I learned so much from other affiliate reps!
  • I enjoyed networking with others and the wealth of information that I am walking away with. I will use it tomorrow and beyond.
  • I enjoyed seeing what other affiliates are doing and getting ideas for our affiliate.
