2008 Outstanding ELA Educator Award Winner

Carolyn Burke and Jerome Harste are joint recipients of the NCTE Outstanding Educator in the English Language Arts Award for their work collaboratively and individually as distinguished educators who have made outstanding contributions to the field of language arts in elementary education.

The Outstanding ELA Award recognizes a distinguished national or international educator who has made major contributions to the field of language arts in elementary education. The Elementary Section Steering Committee will celebrate Carolyn and Jerome's contributions to the English language arts at the Elementary Section Get-Together during the NCTE Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Carolyn BurkeCarolyn is Professor Emeritus of Language Education at Indiana University and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in reading and writing education. She is one of the founding members of the Whole Language Umbrella (WLU) and the Center for Expansion of Language & Thinking (CELT). She has served on advisory and review boards such as Language Arts and The New Advocate and received the WLU Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. 

She has co-authored Creating Curriculum: Teachers and Students as a Community of Learners with Kathy Short, Reading Miscue Inventory: From Evaluation to Instruction with Yetta M. Goodman, Dorothy J. Watson and Brian Cambourne and Reading Miscue Inventory with Yetta M. Goodman and Dorothy J. Watson.

Jerome HarsteJerome (Jerry) is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Language Education at Indiana University where he holds the Martha Lea and Bill Armstrong Chair in Teacher Education. He is Past President of NCTE, the National Reading Conference, the National Conference on Research in Language and Literacy, the Whole Language Umbrella (WLU) and Treasurer for the Center for Expansion of Language & Thinking (CELT).

Jerry has co-authored several books including Beyond Reading and Writing: Inquiry, Curriculum, and Multiple Ways of Knowing with Beth Berghoff, Kathryn A. Egawa and Barry T. Hoonan and Literacy as Social Practice: Primary Voices K-6 with Vivian Vasquez, Kathryn A. Egawa and Richard D. Thompson.

He has received many honors and awards including the WLU Lifetime Achievement Award (2000); Educational Leadership Award, St. Cloud State College (1998); Reading Hall of Fame (1997); IU’s Outstanding Contributions to Literacy Award (1997); Special Service Award (IRA); Alumni Award, Center for Research on Human Learning, University of Minnesota; Albert J. Kingston Award for Distinguished Service (NRC).

Carolyn and JerryCarolyn and Jerry began their long-term partnership at Indiana University. In the late 70’s, they began their award-winning work in early literacy focused on understanding preschoolers’ reading and writing in natural settings. In 1987, Carolyn, Jerry and Virginia Woodward received the NCTE David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English for Language Stories and Literacy Lessons.

They have co-authored several books including Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirers with Kathy Short and Whole Language:  Inquiring Voices with Dorothy Watson.
