2004 Outstanding ELA Educator Award Winner
Vivian Gussin Paley is the recipient of the tenth NCTE Outstanding Educator in the English Language Arts Award.
The Outstanding ELA Award recognizes a distinguished national or international educator who has made major contributions to the field of language arts in elementary education. The Elementary Section Steering Committee celebrated Vivian's contributions to the English language arts at the Elementary Section Get-Together during the NCTE Annual Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Vivian, a kindergarten and nursery school teacher for thirty-seven years, primarily at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, writes and teaches about the world of young children. She examines their stories and play, their logic and their thinking, searching for meaning in the social and moral landscapes of classroom life. She brings her storytelling/story acting and discussion techniques to children, teachers, and parents throughout the world.
Vivian has received numerous awards and accolades, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1989, the Erikson Institute Award for Service to Children in 1987, the American Book Award for Lifetime Achievement given by the Before Columbus Foundation in 1998, and the John Dewey Society's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2000.
Vivian is the author of several books about life in the classroom. Her book, The Girl with the Brown Crayon, has received many awards including the 1999 NCTE David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English, Harvard University Press annual Virginia and Warren Stone Prize as the outstanding book on education and society in 1997, and selected as One of the Best Parenting Books of 1997 by Child Magazine.
