2003 Outstanding ELA Educator Award Winner 

Bernice "Bee" Cullinan is the ninth recipient of the NCTE Outstanding Educator in the English Language Arts Award. The Outstanding ELA Award recognizes a distinguished national or international educator who has made major contributions to the field of language arts in elementary education.

Bernice CullinanDr. Cullinan, emeritus professor of early childhood and elementary education at New York University, is the recipient of the 2003 Outstanding Educator in the English Language Arts Award. The Elementary Section Steering Committee celebrated Bee's contributions to the English language arts at the Elementary Section Get-Together during the NCTE Annual Convention in San Francisco, California.

Bee is currently editor-in-chief of Wordsong, the poetry imprint of Boyds Mill Press, a publisher specializing in children’s literature and language arts. She is a specialist in children's literature, language arts, and reading, as well as the author of numerous books for professionals and parents on literacy topics.

Bee currently serves on various Advisory Boards including: Mazza Collection Art from Children's Books, Reading Rainbow, WGBH Children's Programs, Ranger Rick Magazine, and Literacy & Learning Series, Teachers College Press. She is also on the Highlights for Children Foundation Board of Trustees and is Committee Advisor to the International Reading Association (IRA) Teachers' Choices Project.

Bee was past president of IRA and has served on the Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award Selection Committee, the Caldecott Award Selection Committee, the NCTE Editorial Board and Nominating Committee, and the IRA Board of Directors.

Her honors and awards include induction into the Reading Hall of Fame and The Ohio State University Hall of Fame, The Ohio State Charlotte Huck Professor of Children's Literature Award, Indiana University Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Literacy, The Ohio State University President's Club, the Jeremiah Ludington Award EPA Contribution to Educational Publishing, and the Arbuthnot Award for Outstanding Teacher of Children's Literature.

The NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children was established in 1977, in honor of Bee's son, Jonathan. She has collected children's favorite poems written by the Poetry Award recipients in A Jar of Tiny Stars: Poems by NCTE Award Winning Poets and I Heard a Bluebird Sing: Children Select Their Favorite Poems by Aileen Fisher in hardcover or paperback.
