WritingRecent developments in education and technology have drawn national attention to the instruction and practice of writing. New electronic media like e-mail, instant messaging, text messaging, personal Web pages, and blogging have created multiple opportunities for students to write in different styles for varying purposes and audiences. The proliferation of high-stakes writing tests highlights the importance of strong writing skills as an indicator of student achievement. Research indicates that all students can be taught to improve their writing, and effective writing instruction strategies are known to boost student achievement. The research, policy statements, and information collected here reflect NCTE's commitment to improving writing instruction for all students.
