The National Council of Teachers of English is strongly committed to diversity and inclusion. Throughout the years, NCTE has developed, supported, and maintained positions, policies, procedures, and programming to ensure that the Council maintains a culture that embraces diversity, leverages diverse talents, ensures equitable opportunities for all, and is representative of all individuals who contribute to the field of literacy education.
It is the policy of the National Council of Teachers of English that it demonstrate sensitivity to the concerns of people of color and they be represented on all Council-sponsored programs. People of color refers to historically underrepresented groups--African American, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, Asian Americans, and Latinos.
As we continue to increase awareness and participation of individuals and groups that represent cultural diversity, we remain committed to the development and ongoing support of policies, programs, groups, and special initiatives that address diversity.

The beat of African drums, the voices and verbs of spoken word poetry, and the eclectic energy of Boston's youth highlight an evening of culture, history, and performance. This dynamic event will start at the word when music meets breath, interacting and converging in conversation, using spoken word poetry to reclaim identities and challenge inequities around language, privilege and power. Each performance will illuminate issues transcultural and representative of neo-American being, while highlighting children and our stories told through themes of social justice and communities of harmony. Youth poets from the Boston area will provide the platform on which drumbeats and dance will dramatize this new integrative dialogue, staging the power of cultural practices to engage the connective work of inclusion while championing the voices of the next generation folded into vibrations of the past. These young people will excite and delight you, make you feel proud to be a member of our diverse world. After the performances, we invite you to continue conversations, play and dance together at our post-event reception sponsored by Michigan State University's Center for Applied and Inclusive Teaching and Learning in Arts and Humanities and presented collectively by the Black and Latino Caucuses for all NCTE members and guests. The reception will feature a live DJ and plenty of dance space.

CEE Cultural Diversity Grant
Administered by the Conference on English Education (CEE)
This grant offers up to two $500 awards for first-time NCTE Conference presenters who are members of groups historically underrepresented in NCTE and CEE. Deadline May 1, 2013.
Cultivating New Voices Among Scholars of Color
Administered by the Research Foundation
The Cultivating New Voices program is designed to provide support, mentoring, and networking opportunities for early career scholars of color. The program aims to work with graduate students of color as they conceptualize, plan, conduct, and write their research. Deadline March 15, 2014.
NCTE Advancement of People of Color Leadership Award
This award is given to an NCTE member of color who has made a significant contribution to NCTE and the development of our professional community. Deadline March 18, 2013.
NCTE Early Career Educator of Color Leadership Awards
This award supports early career teachers of color who take part in a three-day summer leadership development conference that helps prepare them to carry out a leadership project in literacy education. Deadline March 18, 2013.
NCTE Early Career Teacher of Color Award of Distinction
This award provides early career teachers of color a national forum at the NCTE Annual Convention for professional collaboration and development as they build accomplished teaching careers as active NCTE members. Deadline March 18, 2013
Affiliate Multicultural Program Award
Administered by the NCTE Standing Committee on Affiliates
To recognize affiliates who adopt programs, policies, activities, and other events which encourage greater participation and development of multicultural involvement within each affiliate. Deadline May 1, 2013
NCTE Fund Teachers for the Dream Affiliate Award
The NCTE Fund invites affiliates to implement initiatives aimed at recruiting English language arts teachers of color and will offer grants to those selected affiliates. Deadline May 1
CCCC Scholars for the Dream Travel Award
Administered by the Conference on College Composition and Communication
This travel award is given to ten first-time CCCC Convention presenters who are members of a historically underrepresented group. Deadline October 10, 2013.
Barksdale-Turner Scholarship in African American/Black Literature
Administered by the NCTE/CCCC Black Caucus
