James Holden

James HoldenJames Holden retired in 2001 after seven and one-half years as assistant professor of education at St. Olaf, he taught, among other courses, English methods and first-year writing classes. In addition, he supervised many preservice English teachers during their twelve weeks of students teaching. He also taught four years in the education department at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, and taught high school and junior high school English for twenty-nine years—for twenty of those years at Northfield High School in Northfield, Minnesota. He has written or co-authored three articles on the topic of Socratic seminars, particularly with a focus on having students prepare questions to lead their own discussions. Married for forty years to Caroline, Holden has two grown children (both also teachers) and three grandchildren. He loves to fly-fish for trout and play tennis. In fact, he is writing a book about coaching tennis in cold weather climates called Tennis on the Tundra: A Short Season.
