James Cross Giblin

James Cross GiblinJames Cross Giblin has enjoyed a dual career in children's books, first as an editor and then as an award-winning author.  A native of Ohio, and a graduate of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, he came to New York City in 1954 to get a Master's Degree at Columbia and stayed on to start a career in publishing.

After spending three years as an assistant editor at Criterion Books, and five years as an editor at Lothrop, Lee and Shepard, he went to the Seabury Press in 1967 as editor-in-chief of its fledgling children's list, Clarion Books.  By the 1980s, Giblin had built Clarion into a highly respected imprint publishing such honored authors and illustrators as Paul Galdone, Eve Bunting, Mary Downing Hahn, Eileen Christelow, and Russell Freedman.

He had always had a desire to write, however, and in 1980 he published his first children's book, a photo essay titled The Scarecrow Book.  Since then, twenty-four more books have come from his pen and computer.  Among his noteworthy recent titles are Good Brother, Bad Brother: The Story of Edwin Booth and John Wilkes Booth (Clarion, 2005), The Many Rides of Paul Revere (Scholastic Press, 2007), and The Rise and Fall of Senator Joe McCarthy (Clarion, 2009).  Mr. Giblin continues to make his home in New York, a city he loves.
