She has either written or co-written a number of books for teachers, including Teaching Writing: Craft, Art, Genre; Drawing Your Own Conclusions: Graphic Strategies for Reading, Writing, and Thinking, with Joan Brown; A Measure of Success: From Assignment to Assessment in English Language Arts (winner of the 1998 James N. Britton Award); and Learning the Landscape: Inquiry-Based Projects for Comprehending and Composing, with Louann Reid and Ruth Vinz, as well as the Daybooks of Critical Reading and Writing, an innovative set of texts for high school students integrating critical reading, writing and thinking.  In addition to a volume of poetry, Black Birds and Other Birds, she has published poems in a number of magazines and journals, including The Dickens and Artlife.
