Fran Claggett - Previous Revision

Fran Claggett, after many years of teaching, is now devoting nearly full time to writing and consulting, while continuing to teach in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Sonoma State University. Fran has worked with the National Council on Education and the Economy, given workshops in Panama and the Virgin Islands through the Bay Area Writing Project. Fran’s interest in brain research led her to develop approaches to reading , writing, and thinking using metaphorical graphics. She has received many awards for her teaching and writing, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Association of Teachers of English.

She has either written or co-written a number of books for teachers, including Teaching Writing: Craft, Art, Genre; Drawing Your Own Conclusions: Graphic Strategies for Reading, Writing, and Thinking, with Joan Brown; A Measure of Success: From Assignment to Assessment in English Language Arts (winner of the 1998 James N. Britton Award); and Learning the Landscape: Inquiry-Based Projects for Comprehending and Composing, with Louann Reid and Ruth Vinz, as well as the Daybooks of Critical Reading and Writing, an innovative set of texts for high school students integrating critical reading, writing and thinking.  In addition to a volume of poetry, Black Birds and Other Birds, she has published poems in a number of magazines and journals, including The Dickens and Artlife.
