Learn about the Initiative

What is the National Day on Writing?  Writing is a daily practice for millions of Americans, but few notice how integral writing has become to daily life in the 21st century.  To draw attention to the remarkable variety of writing we engage in and help make writers from all walks of life aware of their craft, NCTE has established October 20, 2009 as the National Day on Writing.

Is this an official recognized day? Yes! On October 8 the Senate passed a resolution declaring October 20, 2009, the National Day on Writing.

What happens on October 20?  At 12:01 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, October 20, the National Gallery of Writing will be opened up for everyone to view a wide variety of pieces.  A Web cast will air live from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, October 20.
