What Participants are Saying

"Dr. Sarah Robbins' session 'Strategies for Introducing Students to Some of the Masterworks of American Fiction' at the 2011 Texas Christian University Advanced Placement Institute was precisely what our AP Language and Composition teachers needed -- methods for linking novel excerpts to non-fiction texts by the same author.  Sarah engaged participants in her discussion, encouraging them to find ways to keep masterworks such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in an AP Language course whose emphasis has moved from fiction to non-fiction.  Her enthusiasm for her topic, her knowledge of the demands of the AP curriculum, and her academic background combined to make her the perfect package.  Participants responded positively to her easy, approachable manner.  We will invite her to our Institute again."

Holocaust Education Workshop
Clayton County, Jonesboro, Georgia—February 2006

Teachers are invited to explore key themes associated with learning about the Holocaust and related topics through study of texts such as Night and The Diary of Anne Frank in this interactive half-day session. A range of parallel texts addressing these themes are introduced, including ones appropriate for comparative study of the Indian Removal, the Japanese-American internment, as well as the Middle Passage and enslavement of Africans in the U.S. Creative strategies for teaching tied to NCTE and state standards are used, such as interpreting visual culture texts, reflective journaling, and role play. Time for planning—both cross-level and by grade level—is included.
