Dona Italiano - Previous Revision

Dona is a Secondary Language Arts Coordinator and an Advanced Placement English Teacher. She is a site leader for NCTE's Reading Initiative and fellow of the Pennsylvania Writing Project. She designs and manages curriculum in language arts for grades 6-12 and provides in-service training in literacy learning for teachers 6-12 grades to advance district curricular goals and initiatives. She has presented at the National Council of Teachers of English on "When Teachers Work Together." In this presentation, Dona described how she led the grassroots effort to improve the direct instruction of reading in the content areas in grades 6-12. She describes her approach to professional development and implementing innovations and initiatives as to first capitalize on what is at hand. Dona believes that people are the most valuable resource and that the collective knowledge and will of those who feel valued is the only truly transformation tool we have in education.
