As a former middle school teacher and current university faculty member, Laurie maintains her connection to teachers in the classroom and works hard not to lose site of the realities of teaching and learning in a day-to-day basis. She strives to assist preservice and in-service teachers in understanding the value of teaching reading and writing across the curriculum as an integrated approach and not as a separate subject that occurs in isolation away from other content area classes. Laurie also emphasizes the importance of celebrating diversity and creating a classroom environment that is culturally responsive to all of the members of the learning community within the classroom that reflects a global perspective for teaching and learning. She also supports collaborative, problem-based learning environments with critical thinking skills at the core. This type of environment can be easily obtained through a workshop approach to teaching literacy, which is the basis of a constructivist paradigm that she strongly advocates for at the middle school level.
