Workshops

Mechanically Inclined: Teaching Grammar and Editing in Context, Grades 4-8
Consultant:  Jeff Anderson
The words grammar and editing aren’t popular with most students (and many teachers). How do we help students become a part of this vital element of the writing process? Using wall charts, literature, and patterns, teachers discover how merging craft with grammar and editing can and will engage students.

Image Grammar Workshop
Consultant:  Harry R. Noden
Using visual images and powerful passages, Harry Noden will show your teachers how to teach grammar with an artist’s eye and a writer’s perception as part of the writing process. This workshop combines grammar and writing and can be structured for half-day, full-day, or 2-day staff development workshops.

Recommended as an important resource to meet state standards, Image Grammar is designed to provide teachers with classroom-tested strategies that can improve students’ writing.

Key Concepts Covered:

  • Brush Strokes
  • Combining Brush Strokes
  • Painting Images of Form
  • Painting Images of Content
  • Painting Images of Convention
  • Key words for Painting Parallel Structures

Brain-Based Grammar
Presenter: John Crow
Audience: middle and secondary teachers
We begin by demonstrating why a brain-based approach to grammar instruction is effective, while traditional grammar instruction is not.  Participants work together, step-by-step, to learn how to create inquiry-based mini-lessons and use Grammar Wizard Tests, i.e., ways to resolve sentence-level issues by querying one's existing knowledge of English.
