WANDA PORTER is a retired English teacher and works as a language arts consultant in Kailua, Hawaii. She taught in Falls Church, Virginia, and San Diego, California. After moving to Hawaii, she taught at Kamehameha Secondary School for 25 years and was English Department head for 18 years. She is a graduate of the University of Kansas, with teaching credentials from San Diego State College and a master’s degree in Education from United States International University.
Wanda’s long association with NCTE includes a term as Chair of the Secondary Section Steering Committee. A member of CEL since 1987, she has served that organization in several capacities and is currently Associate Chair. She credits CEL with being a valued part of her professional and personal life, for she has found inspiration and advice for leadership duties as well as treasured friends for life.
Wanda enjoys reading and long walks on the beach. Reading cookbooks and watching food shows on television inspire her great love of cooking. Since retirement, she and her husband spend some time traveling each year; Italy and France are their favorite countries. She vows never to stop teaching and learning!
