Patrick Monahan - Previous Revision

PAT MONAHAN, an education consultant, chaired the Department of English and Communication at Downers Grove South High School in Illinois for twenty-seven years.  A graduate of Northwestern University, he began his career as a writing teacher, focusing on writing apprehension and students' individual writing processes.  He participated in the Illinois Writing Project and later served as an IWP trainer.

In the middle of his career, Pat shifted his interest to assessment.  He has written and presented on portfolio assessment, performance-based learning and electronic grading. He believes strongly that reflection and self-assessment are critical if students are to become effective learners.  Currently, he is interested in the reading process and in the ways that all teachers may become more effective teachers of reading.  For several years, Pat served on the Executive Committee of the Illinois Association of Teachers of English as chair of the Intellectual Freedom Committee.

Pat enjoys camping and backpacking.  His most recent trip was to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota.  He has directed camps for the Boy Scouts of America and the Chicago Youth Centers.  He is also an avid reader who enjoys mystery stories.  His favorite mystery writers are Tony Hillerman, Ian Rankin, and P.D. James.
