is the English and Communication Department Chair at Downers Grove South High School in Downers Grove, Illinois. She accepted the chair position in 2007 after teaching for twenty years at Glenbard East High School in Lombard, Illinois. All of Janice’s work has been in large suburban schools (2,500-3,200 students) with diverse student bodies. Janice leads 35 teachers and is in charge of teacher evaluation, scheduling, the budget, student placement, hiring, and a myriad of other activities. She graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, received her master’s degree from Northwestern University, and earned her Type 75 certificate at North Central College.
Janice was instrumental in implementing Professional Learning Communities in her district, and she also started a literacy coaching program. She is in the process of creating a literacy center with peer tutors and is interested in learning about other school’s programs. Special areas of interest include curriculum development, mentoring new teachers, motivating teachers during these stressful times, and content area reading instruction.
In her free time, Janice enjoys reading, baking, and exercise. Her favorite “classic” author is Jane Austen and contemporary favorites include Richard Russo and Kaye Gibbons. She hopes to bring leaders across the country together through her leadership in CEL.
