Transformative Literacy Leadership and Learning

The Conference on English Leadership (CEL) invites educators to participate in a transformative professional learning experience at CEL’s 2013 Convention. Throughout the two and a half day convention, sessions will focus on ways educators adapt their leadership and their instruction to meet the changing needs of students, teachers, and communities. Participants will discuss how teachers and leaders transform English language arts classrooms into interactive, authentic, and rigorous learning environment while also meeting the national and local standards for literacy. Throughout the convention, attendees will participate in interactive sessions presented by literacy leaders who are department chairs, curriculum coordinators, building administrators, college professors, teachers, and education consultants.
Registration includes three meals and two social events, allowing participants to enjoy the collegial spirit of CEL. Choose Workshop W.15 on the registration form or when you register online.

The Boston Sheraton will be the CEL Convention Hotel Headquarters and meetings will be held at the Hynes Convention Center.

Robert Pinsky served an unprecedented three terms as the United States Poet Laureate from 1997 to 2000. He founded the Favorite Poem Project shortly after he was nominated in 1997. The project documents the presence of poetry in American’s lives.
Pinsky’s poems have earned praise for their wild musical energy and ambitious range. His The Figured Wheel: New and Collected Poems 1966-1996 was a Pulitzer Prize nominee and received the Lenore Marshall Award and the Ambassador Book Award of the English Speaking Union. Pinsky’s landmark, best-selling translation of The Inferno of Dante received the Los Angeles Times Book Award in poetry and the Howard Morton Landon Prize for translation.
His book, due in August 2013, will be Singing School: Learning to Write (and Read) Poetry by Studying with the Masters. He is also editing The Best of the Best American Poetry, the twenty-fifth volume of the popular Best American Poetry series. Pinsky is the poetry editor for Slate and publishes frequently in magazines such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, The Threepenny Review, American Poetry Review, and The Best American Poetry anthologies. He teaches in the graduate writing program at Boston University.
Eric Sheninger - "Improving Leadership Through Connected Learning"
The real-time web provides avenues like never before for school leaders to grow through connected learning. Understanding and harnessing the power of social media by leaders is often met with skepticism. This session will examine the facets of a connected learning model for leaders to grow professionally as well expose the many free, readily accessible tools at their disposal. With the tools that are now available and seemingly ubiquitous access to the Internet, connectedness should be the standard, not discounted or just an option for school leaders.
Eric Sheninger is the Principal at New Milford High School located in Bergen County, NJ. He is passionate about establishing and fostering learning environments that are student-centered, collaborative, flexible, and prepare all learners to succeed in the 21st Century. As an educational administrator he firmly believes that effective communication, listening, support, shared decision making, and the integration of technology are essential elements necessary for the transformation of school cultures. Eric has emerged as an innovative leader in the use of social media and web 2.0 technology as tools to engage students, improve communications with stakeholders, and help educators grow professionally. Eric has received numerous national awards including the NASSP Digital Principal Award winner (2012 and Learning Forward's Excellence in Professional Practice Award (2012). He is co-author of Communicating and Connecting With Social Media: Essentials for Principals and What Principals Need to Know About Teaching and Learning Science. He is an education writer for the Huffington Post and co-creator of the Edscape Conference. His blog, A Principal's Reflections, was selected as Best School Administrator Blog in 2011 by Edublogs.
