The Conference on English Leadership (CEL) welcomes all those concerned with language arts leadership. Since 1970, CEL has assisted language arts leaders in sharing mutual problems and insights, exchanging resources, seeking the advice of successful leaders, and investigating issues of greatest concern to leaders.

Optimize the Power of Influential Leadership
“Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another” -John C. Maxwell
No matter what our role is in education, influence can be our most valuable asset. Our actions in small and large settings can greatly impact decisions and create a positive place for students and colleagues. Leadership is about influencing people in countless situations. Taking the time to inspiring others to accomplish what may seem the impossible is worth the effort within our field. When trepidation has crept into the climate of our schools and districts, learning how to continue to make a difference in the lives of people around us is a worthy cause.
As we consider the power of leadership in education, several questions arise. What are the attributes to influence those around us to move in a positive direction for students, teachers, schools, districts, communities, and states? How do we share our work in a collaborative way that promotes literacy and positivity? How do we build strong teams that promote a more positive and productive work environment? What are the ways we influence and teach those around us?
Through self-reflection, we are able to think about our craft, consider the decisions that we make, and be aware of how those actions can impact people around us. Join us for the CEL convention in Minneapolis where we will explore these questions collaboratively The proposal form will be available soon. Please check back.
Janice Schwarze Reflects on the Las Vegas CEL Convention:
The highlights of the CEL Conference for me were the keynote speakers. In particular, Tom Romano and Penny Kittle inspired me with their hands-on approach to leadership and writing. It was wonderful to be in a workshop setting where I could put my thoughts into written words and make some sense of them—something that sounds easy for an English teacher but is actually quite difficult because there is never enough time to do the depth of thinking that needs to be done and which was accomplished at this Sunday workshop. Of course, Kelly Gallagher was dazzling as always, and it was a highlight of my career to be able to have lunch with him, introduce him to the CEL participants, and watch the audience soak up his expertise just as I have in previous workshops. Finally, as I embark on implementing Common Core Standards in my district, I was pleased to discover many sessions that focused on the Common Core. Hearing what other districts are doing across the nation provided me with new ideas and with affirmation that our district is headed in the right direction. I always walk away from a CEL convention proud to be an English teacher, and my Vegas experience was no exception.
