The Conference on English Leadership (CEL) welcomes all those concerned with language arts leadership. Since 1970, CEL has assisted language arts leaders in sharing mutual problems and insights, exchanging resources, seeking the advice of successful leaders, and investigating issues of greatest concern to leaders.

In October 2013, CEL members will vote for two Members-at-Large who will each serve three-year terms on the executive committee of CEL The bylaws permit CEL members to vote either in person at the CEL business session of the NCTE Annual Convention--this year Monday, November 25--or by mail. This year, we are also piloting online voting. CEL members will receive election information via email in October and will be able to cast their votes electronically. Votes received by mail and electronic votes will be added to those from the in-person election conducted at teh Annual Convention. Click here to view the 2013 CEL Election Slate.

The Conference on English Leadership (CEL) invites educators to participate in a transformative professional learning experience at the 2013 Annual Convention. Throughout the two and a half day convention, sessions will focus on ways educators adapt their leadership and their instruction to meet the changing needs of students, teachers, and communities.

DONALYN MILLER: FEATURED SPEAKER
Donalyn Miller has worked with a wide variety of upper elementary and middle school students and currently teaches fifth grade at O.A. Peterson Elementary in Forth Worth, Texas. In her popular book, The Book Whisperer, Donalyn reflects on her journey to become a reading teacher and describes how she inspires and motivates her middle school students to read 40 or more books a year. In her latest book, Reading in the Wild, Donalyn collects responses from 900 adult readers and uses this information to teach lifelong reading habits to her students. Donalyn currently co-facilitates the community blog, The Nerdy Book Club and co-writes a monthly column for Scholastic’s Principal-to-Principal Newsletter. Her articles about teaching and reading have appeared in publications such as Choice Literacy's The Big Fresh, The Reading Teacher, Educational Leadership and The Washington Post.

Janice Schwarze Reflects on the Las Vegas CEL Convention:
The highlights of the CEL Conference for me were the keynote speakers. In particular, Tom Romano and Penny Kittle inspired me with their hands-on approach to leadership and writing. It was wonderful to be in a workshop setting where I could put my thoughts into written words and make some sense of them—something that sounds easy for an English teacher but is actually quite difficult because there is never enough time to do the depth of thinking that needs to be done and which was accomplished at this Sunday workshop. Of course, Kelly Gallagher was dazzling as always, and it was a highlight of my career to be able to have lunch with him, introduce him to the CEL participants, and watch the audience soak up his expertise just as I have in previous workshops. Finally, as I embark on implementing Common Core Standards in my district, I was pleased to discover many sessions that focused on the Common Core. Hearing what other districts are doing across the nation provided me with new ideas and with affirmation that our district is headed in the right direction. I always walk away from a CEL convention proud to be an English teacher, and my Vegas experience was no exception.
