Accreditor for Teaching Programs Puts New Emphasis on Research and Real Life
Colleges preparing the next generation of teachers will need to rethink their approach if they want to maintain their accreditation and meet the needs of public schools, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education says. The group announced new accreditation requirements today.

Teacher education programs are now required to meet higher standards or increase their emphasis on classroom training in order to achieve accreditation, according to new guidelines being announced today by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Subject-Matter Groups Want Voice in Standards
Forty-six states have signed on to the Common Core standards in reading and math which are being drafted by the National Governors Association, the Council of Chief State School Officers, ACT, the College Board, and Achieve. But the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the International Reading Association have not been consulted. NCTE Executive Director Kent Williamson is quoted.
