Language Policy Committee (November 2009)

Chair: Geneva Smitherman, Michigan State University

The Committee on Language Policy is being reconstituted with the following charges:

  1. Continue to monitor English-Only and anti-bilingual legislation and policies and devise strategies to advocate for language rights;
  2. Continue to promote language diversity awareness and pedagogy to educational administrators and teachers at various levels;
  3. Continue to develop strategies that promote the value of language diversity for dissemination to legislators, policy-makers, and the public;
  4. Continue the updating of the SRTOL annotated bibliography;
  5. Develop content for the LPC web page on the CCCC website;
  6. Collect data and information on departments and programs effectively addressing language diversity and report results quarterly to the EC for posting on the website;
  7. Continue to offer convention workshops on language diversity;
  8. File reports twice a year prior to the CCCC and NCTE conference meetings using the Report Format; and compose a post for the CCCC web site that communicates your ongoing work.  NCTE staff will see that your text is posted on your committee's behalf.
