Committee on Assessment (November 2010)
Co-Chair: Larry McDoniel, Saint Louis Community College, MO
Co-Chair: Summer Smith Taylor, Clemson University
April 2008 Update:
The Committee on Assessment has created a new CCCC Position Statement on Writing Assessment. The new statement is streamlined and updated. It focuses on guiding principles, each of which is followed by a list of implications stated as best practices. The statement concludes with applications of the principles to settings in which assessment occurs. The committee’s one-day workshop at the 2008 convention, will give CCCC members the opportunity to work with leading assessment scholars to think about how the position statement can help them address assessment issues in their institutions. Attendees will collaborate with the committee and scholars to develop individualized sets of assessment best practices and action plans that fit their institutional contexts.
Committee Charge:
In recognition of Assessment as an ongoing and crucial part of the teaching of composition, the CCCC Assessment Committee is charged with serving to promote and preserve ethical writing assessment that works for the good of students, teachers, and the profession by:
- Keeping abreast of changes in Assessment of writing policies that affect the profession and suggesting revisions of the current statement to reflect any changes.
- Working with the CCCC officers and NCTE staff to disseminate the Position Statement on Writing Assessment in multiple venues.
- Supplementing the position statement with a bibliography and hyperlinks to related position statements and explanations of terms.
