Committee Charge
This committee is charged with addressing and providing guidance on intellectual property issues that affect CCCC and NCTE and that impact writing instruction generally. More specifically, the committee will:
Charge 1: Keep the CCCC and NCTE membership informed about intellectual property developments, through reports to the CCCC EC, other forums and new mediums, including the MemberWeb site.
Charge 2: Maintain a close working relationship with the Caucus on Intellectual Property and Composition Studies and related NCTE groups and staff.
Charge 3: Develop and update CCCC position and policy statements to guide writing teachers’ and researchers’ uses of course packs, electronic materials, issues of plagiarism, etc.
Charge 4: Address issues of concern to the organizations, such as interpretations of fair use, copyright debates, and evolving Intellectual Property policies and continue to be a resource to the NCTE DC officer for their work with lawmakers.
Fall 2012 Update
The first of the enumerated goals in the Intellectual Property Committee of CCCC’s mission statement reads as follows: “keep the CCCC and NCTE memberships informed about intellectual property developments, through reports in the CCCC newsletter and in other NCTE and CCCC forums.” To this end, the Intellectual Property Committee publishes monthly reports in the NCTE In-Box on major developments in intellectual property law, policy, and research. In addition, the IP Committee regularly proposes IP policy statements for the CCCC/NCTE memberships to consider. The IP Committee works closely with the Caucus on Intellectual Property and Composition Studies on all IP issues. This year we continue to focus on the outcome of the Cambridge, Oxford, and Sage Press vs Georgia State case, which has set new standards for online reserves for teaching. We are also continuing to focus on increased awareness of open access publishing and alternative contract language for retaining rights for scholarly journal articles, and on developing a statement on plagiarism detection services. We encourage colleagues to share their copyright questions and concerns with our committee and recommend copyright issues that warrant clarification, analysis, and/or action.
