Committee on Disability Issues (March 2012)

November 2009 Update

The Committee on Disability Issues worked collaboratively to develop the Policy on Disability, and we are pleased that it was adopted and affirmed by CCCC in November 2006.
We are now working on developing a website and blog that would not only provide links to curricular resources but which also could become an interactive site for discussing disability issues in teaching and research, and in student, staff, and faculty lives.
A SIG on Disability Issues is very active, and we invite anyone interested to attend its meetings at the annual convention.  All 2010 CCCC Presenters will also receive a bulletin about best practices for creating accessible presentations in advance of this year’s convention.  Please use this bulletin as a guide when you develop your presentation. Also, look for the CDICC booth at the 2010 convention in Louisville—we hope to raise awareness of disability issues at CCCC, and offer advice and support to all attendees.  For instance, if you are wondering how you can make your presentation more accessible, come and see us.

Committee Charge

The committee is charged with the following:

  1. To continue to work with the NCTE/CCCC and the Convention Program Chair to make the convention increasingly accessible (through, for examples, creating and circulating in advance of the conference guidelines for accessibility and supporting an information table at the conference.)
  2. To promote best practices for access and full inclusion.  Accordingly, to help develop and maintain a website on disability issues and support the proposing of conference sessions on disability issues.
  3. To consult with NCTE on employment policies and practices to ensure access and full inclusion
  4. To identify funding sources for cost items such as the hiring of an ADA consultant.
  5. To research disability issues as they impact the writing classroom and the teaching and learning of writing.  Then, if appropriate, to develop proposals for educating the membership on these issues to be presented to the EC for approval.  Finally to consider whether it would be appropriate for the CCCC to adopt a position statement on the teaching of writing to students with disabilities.
  6. To combine with other committees where possible to improve efficiency.

Why the dirth of comments? Is this an indication that what mark Aronoff wrote in The "Chronicle of Higher Education" is accurate?: "Over the last two decades, disability has become the most taboo subject in American society". So taboo, even in CCCC?
