2015 Halle Award Winner - Previous Revision

Tonya PerryTonya Perry is the recipient of the 2013 NCTE Richard W. Halle Award for Outstanding Middle Level Educator. This award honors a junior high/middle level educator who has worked to promote understanding of the developmental needs and characteristics of young adolescents, especially in the English language arts.

Middle level education has been Tonya’s focus throughout her career as a classroom teacher and university professor. As associate professor at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, she teaches and researches the topics of adolescent reading and writing and curriculum design in an effort to find the best ways to help teachers and students develop their talents and maximize their potential. She works with various schools and districts to develop her inquiry into methods of critical and creative approaches of instruction. In one district, she facilitates monthly professional development on curriculum writing with middle and high school teachers. 

Tonya has been an active member and office holder in many professional organizations throughout her career. She is co-director of The Red Mountain Writing Project and has worked in various capacities with the executive board of the Alabama Council of Teachers of English (ACTE). Through her involvement with NCTE, Tonya helped to establish the Middle Level Section, was elected Middle Level Representative-at-Large, and has been a member on several committees and advisory boards including ReadWriteThink.

Tonya has written several books, including Supporting Students in a Time of Core Standards: Grades 6-8, and has had numerous articles published in Voices from the Middle and English Journal

She has also been recognized with many awards, including being named the Alabama Teacher of the Year and being a finalist for National Teacher of the Year.
