Thank you for taking part in NCTE’s Literacy Education Advocacy Day on April 19. Find a schedule for the day, a map of Capitol Hill, and some tips on legislative visits below. Preparation is the key to a successful legislative visit.

Begin by reading the issue papers listed below and choosing one or two you'd like to share with the legislative office your visit.

Choose one or two of these issues to focus on during your visit to your legislators' offices.

Decide on  one-three focused points that you want to emphasize on the issue during your visit.

Think about stories of what works in the classroom to emphasize these points. Staffers and legislators hear often what doesn’t work, so they need to learn what does. For example, if you are going to focus on formative assessment, your listener(s) will benefit most from hearing about specific strategies that have helped you improve student learning. They will really perk up their ears if you have evidence of the ways in which the strategies have had positive effects.

Be prepared for hearing new information on Thursday, which may vary across offices that you visit because staffers are in on different levels and kinds of conversations regarding these developments.

Tell Us about Your Visits

Please use this report form to tell us about the visits you made on Advocacy Day. This form will also be in the participant packet you'll receive in Washington. You may return it to NCTE staff on Advocacy Day or send it to NCTE (advocacy@ncte.org).
