NCTE Literacy Education Advocacy Day

April 28, 2011

 

Morning of preparation -- Capitol Visitor Center, Room SVC 202-203
8:45-11:45 a.m.

 

Participants will

  • hear about current developments in ESEA reauthorization
  • think together about NCTE’s Education Policy Platform
  • rehearse what they plan to say during afternoon visits with legislative staff members

Speakers include

  • Steven Means, Senior Policy Advisor, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, U.S. Department of Education 
  • Sarah Bolton, Legislative Assistant, Office of U.S. Senator Patty Murray 
  • An experienced NCTE member on what makes an effective Hill visit

Afternoon of visits -- Senate and House office buildings
12:00-4:30 p.m.

Participants will choose timing and place for lunch.

Participants will visit their Senators and Representatives with whom they have made appointments.

Debriefing and celebration of the day -- Rayburn House Office Building, Room B-340
4:30-6:00 p.m.

Participants will write visit reports, share accounts of the day, and enjoy light food and refreshments.
