Literacy Coaches

What is a literacy coach?  A literacy coach:

  • Is a highly trained and qualified individual
  • Assists teachers in developing strategies to improve student literacy
  • Forms long term partnerships with teachers and school districts
  • Provides assistance to help students read content effectively
  • Allows students to engage in critical thinking to improve literacy skill
  • Helps students engage in discussion about literature that is relevant to real life experiences

The National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association have compiled Standards for Middle and High School Literacy Coaches.

NCTE and IRA have also created a Literacy Coaching Clearinghouse to provide the education community with information on how literacy coaches are being used.  NCTE/IRA Name First Literacy Coaching Clearinghouse Director
