Professional Development
NCTE believes that the key to good education is having knowledgeable teachers in every classroom. Achieving this goal requires the support of programs that provide for the professional development of teachers.
NCTE affirms that teachers, like other professionals, build new knowledge and revise current beliefs through experiences, reading, discussion, reflection, and interaction with colleagues. Teachers who pursue such activities maintain a vitality that keeps them in the profession, that improves the quality of learning for their students, and that promotes the career of teaching to others.
NCTE believes that
- teachers must be empowered as active learners who serve as coaches, mentors, and collaborative creators of learning experiences rather than as dispensers of information and as decision makers in every aspect of schooling.
- teachers need the opportunity to spend time with exemplary professionals and projects. They need regular, frequent provisions for growth and learning within the school.
- teachers need to attend professional meetings during regular school sessions without loss of pay. Administrators and school boards should encourage this attendance and provide adequate financial support.
