Resolution on Labor Equity

2004

NCTE Annual Business Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana

Background

In the face of widespread overuse and abuse of part-time faculty, in 1989 the Conference on College Composition and Communication adopted a set of principles and standards regarding the appropriate use of part-time, adjunct faculty in writing instruction.

     In 1997, NCTE adopted a resolution "On Affirming Labor Equity for Adjunct Teachers and Graduate Employees," calling on policymakers to redress widespread inequities in compensation for educational workers.

     While some efforts have been made to address these long-standing issues of educational labor inequity, we now find these practices being extended to early childhood education programs, to teachers of English language learners in pre-K-12 schools, and part-time, adjunct faculty in schools of education. Be it therefore

Resolution

Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English reaffirm that educational institutions at all levels must be committed to labor equity and fairness in compensation and benefits.

     Be it further resolved that NCTE call on policymakers and legislators to meet the full costs of effective student learning.
