On Multicultural Curriculum Materials

Background NCTE members proposed this resolution in the conviction that students from all cultural groups in the United States can benefit if literature and other materials depicting diverse cultures are included in the curriculum.  Broader understanding and enriched appreciation of the nation's cultural heritage will result, they contended, citing the need for higher-quality curriculum materials for teaching language and the humanities.  Be it therefore Resolution Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English, through its Executive Committee, urge publishers to increase the production of books, films, records, and other study materials which accurately and sensitively depict Mexican American, Asian American, Afro-American, Native American, and other indigenous minority cultures and traditions, for use in elementary schools, secondary schools, and colleges.
