SLATE represents the commitment of caring English language arts teachers to use our intellectual leadership and professional knowledge to make a difference in decisions affecting our classrooms and our students. All NCTE members are members of SLATE.

Through SLATE you’ll receive updates regarding the status of current legislation and English language arts policy matters (e.g., testing, teacher quality requirements, No Child Left Behind provisions, higher education), news of NCTE’s anti-censorship efforts, information on Council guidelines and position statements, and tips on how to take effective action (e.g., write letters to the editor, build relationships with local policymakers, contact administrators or legislators). Occasionally, you will receive emailed alerts, such as this one, concerning issues that are timely in nature and require immediate action. The Newsletter features regular reports on censorship challenges, on legislation, on issues which affect the teaching of English language arts, on publications and other resources related to SLATE's concerns, and on the activities of the NCTE/SLATE Steering Committee on Social and Political Concerns
Starter Sheets are periodically issued to provide brief summaries of research and professional opinion related to current issues in the teaching of English language arts. The Starter Sheets may be reproduced in quantity by anyone who wishes to use them to promote better understanding of issues in the teaching of English language arts.
