2008 NCTE Literacy Education Advocacy Day

You will do important work when you come to Washington, DC, for NCTE’s Advocacy Day on Thursday, April 17, 2008.  The day will focus on learning about and influencing federal policy important to literacy education. A morning briefing by legislative staffers will prepare you for afternoon meetings with legislators on the Hill and a late afternoon gathering to debrief the day’s experiences.

The morning meeting begins at 9:00 a.m. in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room B318 and the afternoon debriefing ending by 6:30 p.m. will be held in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room B354Meetings with your legislators or their aides will be in Capitol office buildings as well.  If you are flying to DC, Washington Reagan National Airport is the closest airport to the Capitol and is on the Metro.  Hotels are available in the Capitol area; but because of cost and ease of Metro travel, you might choose to stay in another part of the city, in Northern Virginia, or in Maryland.  If you’re driving and not staying overnight, the best place to park is at Union Station, just a short walk from the Capitol.

Registration: Registration is free to all NCTE members. Participants are responsible for their own transportation, housing, and meals.

Schedule

Before Advocacy Day we will provide via email suggestions and resources to help you derive the most benefit from your participation, including in meeting with legislators or legislative staffers. Your voice is essential in alerting your legislators to educational policies important to NCTE members and their students.

If you have questions about the day, please contact Linda Walters at or 1-800-369-6283, ext. 3632.
