How You Can Get Started! |
| |
NCTE Spokesperson Network |
Spokespersons help explain NCTE positions to journalists and other non-educators. In general, this role will not require more than an hour a month; when issues are urgent, spokespersons are asked to reply within a day but often within hours.
|
Spokespersons are selected and trained by members of the NCTE Communications Staff. Typically, training sessions are held at the NCTE or CCCC Conventions; training may be supplemented by webinars and conference calls. |
Contact NCTE Communications Director Millie Davis to let her know of your interest and issue expertise, or respond to the annual survey of member volunteer interests (typically circulated in July or August). |
| |
Local or Regional Issues Advocate (SLATE) |
NCTE issue advocates volunteer to stay in touch with key legislators or legislative staff in their communities and keep them informed about Council positions or research. Over the year, this work will average about two hours a month. |
Issue advocates are selected by NCTE Staff to work as a team on outreach and advocacy campaigns. |
Contact NCTE Executive Director Kent Williamson, Communications Director Millie Davis, DC Office Director Barbara Cambridge, or West Office Director Dale Allender to let them know of your interest and issue expertise, or respond to the annual survey of member volunteer interests (typically circulated in July or August).

Participate in Action Alert Campaigns, or Activities during Literacy Education Advocacy Month or Day |
Action alerts are time-sensitive requests for members to contact a public official about a public policy matter. Advocacy Month (spring) and Day are times when members simultaneously visit or reach out to legislators. There are perhaps a half dozen action alerts annually, each requiring no more than an hour or two to participate. Advocacy Month participation might take a half day, and Advocacy Day in DC is a full-day commitment. |
Any member who doesn’t opt out of the SLATE network will receive invitations to participate in Action Alert or Advocacy Day or Month activities. |
Any member can participate by responding to periodic email invitations or to notices in the NCTE INBOX online newsletter. |
