GRANT PRIMERS

There are a number of resources available on the Web designed to assist grant writers in identifying the appropriate style and method for writing grants.  Here are a few links that we think provide a nice overview to the whole process.

  • The Foundation Center offers a Virtual Classroom which provides an excellent overview on grant procurement.  Check out the tutorials on Orientation to Grantseeking, a Guide to Funding Research, Proposal Budgeting Basics and more!

  • You may wish to explore a different Web site that aids grant writers in designing successful grant proposals that includes checklists and problem evaluation charts.

  • There are times when grant makers only are interested in a letter of inquiry that serves as a synopsis of the larger project.  If there is sufficient interest in the project based on the letter of inquiry, then grant seekers are asked to submit a full proposal.  The Foundation Center offers a listing of resources for letters of inquiry that we have found quite helpful.

  • SchoolGrants offers several resources on grant writing, including grant writing tips and sample proposals.

  • If you're searching hints for grants with a technology slant, this resources offers some hints and a searchable database.  Be sure to examine the blue text box on the site for additional information.

  • If your focus is purely on federal grants, the US Department of Education offers a site entitled, "What Should I Know About ED Grants?," that provides a non-technical summary of the ED's grant process.

  • Check out the sponsorships and fundraising campaign tactics at this site plus an informational library from the folks at Fundraising Forum.

Please note that, while there are numerous commercial sites available that offer assistance, it is our intention to limit resources to non-profit and governmental sites that provide no-cost guidance to the grant procurement process.  Should a product or service be made available for a fee at these sites, please understand that our listing above in no way represents an endorsement of any product or service that may be offered.
