NCTE/SLATE Steering Committee on Social and Political Concerns
Function: To influence public attitudes and policy decisions affecting the teaching of English language arts at local, state, and national levels; to implement and publicize the policies adopted by NCTE. As part of its political action function, SLATE (Support for the Learning and Teaching of English) will serve as NCTE's intellectual freedom network.
What major actions or projects have been completed by your group since July 1, 2005?
Two sessions were held at 2005 national convention in NCTE/SLATE”s guaranteed slots. Thanks to Fred Barton, past committee member and the next committee chair, two issues of SLATE Newsletter were published with input from the members of NCTE/SLATE Steering Committee.`
This year NCTE/SLATE’s status within NCTE was changed to that of a Standing Committee. This change impacts how the committee is constituted, changing committee appointment from national election to Executive Committee appointment. It also makes NCTE/SLATE information and publications available to all NCTE members, with or without a small donation.
What projects, initiatives, or studies are “in progress” at this time?
Two sessions are organized and approved for 2006 national convention in Nashville in NCTE/SLATE’s guaranteed slots.
