Program to Recognize Excellence in Student
Literary Magazines

Function: To advise the NCTE staff liaison on any changes that should be made in the Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines; to review judging criteria; to develop and review criteria for selecting Highest Award winners; and to select Highest Award winners.

What major actions or projects have been completed by your group since July 1, 2005?

Revised the scoring guide for the magazine.

What projects, initiatives, or studies are “in progress” at this time?

We will be on the NCTE program with a presentation and discussion about high school magazines and literacy.

Strategic Governance: Over the past two years, the NCTE Executive Committee has established outcomes and priorities relating to these key topics in our field: Teacher Quality, Adolescent Literacy, Assessment, Writing, Multimodal Literacy and Technology, Research and Teaching, and English Language Learners. Currently, they are investigating the broad topic of professional development for literacy educators.

Does your group have research findings or suggestions to contribute that are relevant to on-going work on these strategic governance topics?

English language learner research talks about the need for students to have publications in their first language.  I would like to see a push for literary magazines in high schools that are published by  ELL students.
