2003 Annual Report, Committee on Excellence In Poetry for Children
The main duty of the committee this year was to select the winner of the NCTE Excellence in Poetry for Children Award.We are pleased to announce that the 2003 winner is Mary Ann Hoberman. Ms. Hoberman was informed of this honor and has agreed to speak at the Annual Convention in 2003.This will be part of a program celebrating the Award which will include speakers from her publishers and a poetry committee member commenting on her work, in addition to Ms. Hoberman’s comments. The Poetry Committee chairs also wrote a Profile of Ms. Hoberman, which will appear in Language Arts.
The Committee is also co-sponsoring an All Day Workshop on Poetry with the Children’s Literature Assembly. “Hooray for Poetry! Poets, Teachers and Poetry Performers Speak!”was designed to bring together various partners in the cultivation of children’s poetry appreciation, including the writing, sharing and performing of poetry. Speakers include Georgia Heard, Poetry Alive, Nikki Grimes, Kris George, Alice Schertle, Mary Ann Hoberman, J. Patrick Lewis, Lee Bennett Hopkins, and several classroom teachers. Chairs are Amy McClure and Shirley Ernst.
Additionally, the Committee sponsored a program in Portland with poet Nancy Willard.
