2002 Annual Report, Standing Committee Against Censorship

Again the Standing Committee Against Censorship (SCAC) wishes to thank Charles Suhor for his responses to challenges that come into Headquarters and for his advice and counsel throughout the year.

The Committee held its annual meeting and sponsored two concurrent sessions during the Baltimore convention: 1) Policies to Guide Users and Protect Intellectual Freedom on the Internet and 2) Keeping Our Books in Your Classroom: Two Authors Look at Censorship.

SCAC has taken on the task of reviewing and updating/revising each of the printed NCTE position statements on censorship.  A different team of committee members will work on each statement except The Students’ Right To Read, on which the Conference on English Education (CEE) is working.  The entire SCAC will respond to their work in Atlanta.  Once the Standing Committee approves materials’ revisions, SCAC will seek approval from the Executive Committee for publishing the documents.

OAnne Webb, Chair
