PROMISING YOUNG WRITERS IMPROMPTU TOPICS

2007--If you could go back to another time for one day, whom would you like to meet? Explain why you would like to meet this individual and discuss what you would tell her/him about life in the present and why.

2006--Everyone has an opinion about growing up.  Write about what it means to be an adult and how you feel about becoming one.

2005--Our parents or guardians are major teachers and influences in our lives, whether through accident or intention. Describe a time one of your parents or guardians made a difference in your life. Use details that put your reader in the scene of the action.

2004--We have all experienced at least one wonderful day when almost everything went right. Think about one of your wonderful days. Describe the main event that caused that day to be so wonderful.

2003--Enjoyment enhances an experience. Think about experiences you've had alone, with family, with friends, or with anyone and what brought joy to the occasion. Describe and explain what made it so enjoyable.

2002--Most of us have difficulty imagining life without a telephone. Think about a piece of equipment such as the telephone, a calculator, VCR, or CD player that is important to you. Explain why it is important to you.

2001--If you were asked to name the most valuable thing you own that was not bought in a store, what would it be? Explain why it is valuable to you.

2000--A friend of yours will enter the eighth grade next fall. After reflecting on your own personal experiences, what is the most helpful advice you would like to share with your friend. Explain why you think the advice will be helpful.

1999--Often we form opinions based upon first impressions. Sometimes that first impression turns out to be true, but sometimes it isn't. Write about a quick judgment you made about someone. Discuss how your first impression changed or did not change after you got to know the person.
