NCTE Robert Shafer Memorial Award

Call for Nominations

The NCTE Standing Committee on International Concerns is proud to announce that it will award the second annual Robert Shafer Memorial Award.

Not only did Bob Shafer supply the drive behind organizing the NCTE International Assembly in 1976; he also shepherded it along throughout the 20-plus years of its existence.  As an assembly, it had the ability to draw members from other countries without the expense of NCTE membership.  As the major NCTE link with the International Federation of Teachers of English (IFTE), the International Assembly made it possible for many NCTE members to participate in the IFTE conferences.  Before the ease of international communication via internet, Bob's little black book of addresses and telephone numbers provided a web of international contacts that made communications possible.  He provided the connections for collaborating on conference proposals and presentations, facilitating home stays and other arrangements for international trips, or generally getting people around the world in touch with one another.

The purpose of the Robert Shafer Memorial Award is to use the resources in a special account, from the old International Assembly, with other donations, for continuing the memory of Robert Shafer by honoring an individual or organization with the Robert Shafer Memorial Award.  The Award is given to recognize Robert Shafer's work in international education and, more specifically, his outstanding contributions to teaching and learning English in an international context. As a living memorial, it will honor an educator or organization’s membership who also enrich international education in the spirit of Robert Shafer and the Standing Committee on International Concerns Mission.

Nominations of individuals or organizations concerned with the teaching and learning of World Englishes may be made by submitting a nomination form and sending it by:
